A Letter from Compassion International

Admin : January 14, 2010 7:23 am : missions

The catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti yesterday has resulted in unfathomable chaos and devastation for hundreds of thousands of children and families.

Compassion sponsors and donors serve more than 65,000 children in Haiti. At least a third of them live in the areas that were hardest hit.

We are working rapidly to assess the situation and determine the full extent of damage:

  • Sadly, we anticipate there will be many deaths.
  • We anticipate thousands of children and families will have lost everything.
  • We anticipate many of our church-based child development centers will have been destroyed.

Without a doubt, the children we serve in Haiti are in shock and face immediate needs for food, water, medical care, shelter and counseling. We have teams prepared to respond, and we are deeply committed to helping each child.

Please reach out in the name of Jesus to bring relief, comfort, love and restoration to precious children and families whose lives have been devastated by this crisis.

Dr. Wess Stafford

President, USA

Haiti Update from AA's Mark Stuart

Admin : January 14, 2010 7:07 am : missions

Mark Stuart, lead singer of Audio Adrenaline, sent out this email. Mark and his parents started an organization called Hands and Feet working with the people in Haiti. Mark was there when the earthquake hit. If you’re a person who prays, do bow in for them and the people they love. Humbling.

Hi everyone….

Our internet is working finally. So I’m sending this to a few of you…. Everyone here is ok, but we are all very scared. The buildings held up great, but there are several houses right around us that have collapsed. Also, Hotel Cyvadier had major damage, while the brand new three story “peace of mind” hotel was demolished. Francine, one of our teenage nannies was in afternoon school and escaped while the building

was collapsing around her because she was sitting by the door…however many of her classmates died yesterday. Many houses and and buildings have collapsed in Jacmel including the hospital. I know most of the news there is coming from PAP, but there is substantial loss of life here on the south coast. We need prayer for wisdom and strength. Its very chaotic here. We were able to buy diesel this morning andhopefully get more propane for cooking tomorrow. Last night was crazy…slept on the dirt in the center of the village…away from the buildings. Tonight we may venture back indoors, but that is yet to be decided. We go in and out to get necessities. The Haitian people are numb and sad to say very used to death, but this has created what

seems to be a hypnotic state. I’ve never been in a situation were you feel SO helpless, fearful, and small. The tremors are coming again as i type this. Whoa!!!

Mark

Lisa Back from the DR, but we still need your help!

Admin : October 14, 2009 12:41 pm : missions, Uncategorized

What an exhausting, yet fulfilling week with HOPE International in the Dominican Republic last week.  I came away with a better understanding of how microfinance works to help lift people out of poverty.  I also witnessed the smiles on the clients faces and the joy in their hearts from someone believing in them and giving them an opportunity to be creative and earn a living.

Many of us take for granted the opportunity to earn a living.  So many creative, intelligent people are mired in poverty and are denied the right to earn a decent living often because they lack access to capital.  We hope you will  join us in helping the people of the Dominican Republic realize their dreams and experience the love of Jesus for maybe the first time.

We are working to fund a community bank of 40 borrowers who will keep each other accountable and help each other with work and loan pay back if needed.  We need just 100 people to give 50 dollars,  or 200 people to give 25 dollars.    For so little money people can start small businesses and have access to healthcare, literacy classes, education and the love of Christ!

Join the WJTL/HOPE International Team by clicking here!!!

Thanks for your help!
