New Tunes at 9 Roundup with Rhett Walker Band

phil : October 23, 2014 7:37 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

The Rhett Walker Band played the Junction Center Tent last night, along with Plumb and David Dunn.

Singer/guitarist Rhett Walker and drummer Kenny Davis were my guests on New Tunes at 9; we talked about the band’s second project, “Here’s to the Ones,” released last week. http://wjtl.com/listen/wjtl-casts/ The Rhett Walker Band is a Southern-fried rock band with deep roots in South Carolina. Rhett Walker unapologetically cites his musical influences as The Allman Brothers, Tom Petty, Ryan Adams, and John Mellancamp, among others. (His songwriting heroes are a diverse cast of characters; Rhett explained the process of writing for the record, and the importance of taking time to cook on the grill.)

New Tunes at 9 Roundup with King’s Kaleidoscope

phil : October 15, 2014 6:19 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

This week, I want to introduce to you a new band: King’s Kaleidoscope. King’s Kaleidoscope is a 10-piece band from Seattle—a tentet–that has it’s own unique musical vision. King’s Kaleidoscope classify themselves as alternative worship. So what does that mean? Well, Lead singer Chad Gardner is a former turntablist who is intent upon mixing EDM (electronic dance music) with Praise & Worship Music.

Chad Gardner was my guest last week on New Tunes at 9; we talked about the unusual sound of the band, and the first radio single, “I Know.” Truth be told, the joyous nature of the song belies the deep sorrow that Chad has felt over the past year. (Chad mentioned that he and his wife lost a father-in law to cancer; and they lost their first son to a still birth.)

phil : September 11, 2014 7:44 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

Ryan Daniel from Among the Thirsty was my guest this week on New Tunes at 9. Ryan took a few minutes to talk about the band’s new project, “Who You Say I Am.” The new radio single, “Completely,” is the finest song the band has recorded to date. It’s a very vulnerable song that features Ryan’s melancholy voice set against an acoustic piano and beautiful strings.

Ryan writes: “I’m feeling so small; standing here weeping. I’m coming clean of the secrets I’m keeping. I’ve caused so much pain to the ones I love most. And I’m falling apart as I carry my heart to your throne.” (Listen to Ryan Daniel on New Tunes at 9 http://wjtl.com/listen/wjtl-casts/)

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

The new record by Sorensen, “Songs-Volume 1,” is available now. Sorensen is a piano-based, pop-rock band, from Maryland, led by the husband and wife team of Jeremy and Kimberly Sorensesn. Jeremy Sorensen is a music teacher and unabashed fan of artists like Ben Folds, Elton John, Vince Guaraldi, and Billy Joel; his songs are delicate, charming, and often whimsical. The new project is available now on iTunes, and includes the first single, “With You,” currently playing on WJTL.

phil : August 20, 2014 9:01 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

Singer/songwriter, and worship leader, Laura Story, was my guest this week, on New Tunes at 9. Laura, who is expecting twins in early October, took some time to talk about motherhood, music, and her role as worship leader at Perimeter Church, Atlanta.

Laura Story is a gentle, reverent songwriter; her signature song “Blessings” has resonated with many people, especially those who have struggled with severe illnessnes. Recently, a fan posted on Laura’s facebook page: “I listen to your music while I get dressed in the morning; your music lifts me up every time I listen to it.” (“Blessings” is found on her second, self-titled project.)

The latest record from Laura Story is “God of Every Story”; it includes the first two singles: “Who Is Like Our God” and “O Love of God,” the latter of which includes the lyrics, “O Love of God, strong and true, in my barren soul, a river running through. O love of God swift and straight, you have washed away my sin and left no trace.” Here’s what Laura had to say about the song: http://wjtl.com/listen/wjtl-casts/
