New Tunes at 9 Roundup with Sorensen

phil : August 28, 2014 6:13 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

The new record by Sorensen, “Songs-Volume 1,” is available now. Sorensen is a piano-based, pop-rock band, from Maryland, led by the husband and wife team of Jeremy and Kimberly Sorensesn. (Jeremy’s former band, Unsearchable Riches,  gained national attention by scoring extremely well in an independent music competition held by CCM magazine. In 2003, Unsearchable Riches had a minor hit on WJTL with the song, “Friday Night.”)

Jeremy Sorensen is a music teacher and unabashed fan of artists like Ben Folds, Elton John, Vince Guaraldi, and Billy Joel; his songs are delicate, charming, and often whimsical. The new project is available now on iTunes, and includes the first single, “With You,” currently playing on WJTL.

New Tunes at 9 Roundup with Laura Story

phil : August 20, 2014 9:01 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

Singer/songwriter, and worship leader, Laura Story, was my guest this week, on New Tunes at 9. Laura, who is expecting twins in early October, took some time to talk about motherhood, music, and her role as worship leader at Perimeter Church, Atlanta.

Laura Story is a gentle, reverent songwriter; her signature song “Blessings” has resonated with many people, especially those who have struggled with severe illnessnes. Recently, a fan posted on Laura’s facebook page: “I listen to your music while I get dressed in the morning; your music lifts me up every time I listen to it.” (“Blessings” is found on her second, self-titled project.)

The latest record from Laura Story is “God of Every Story”; it includes the first two singles: “Who Is Like Our God” and “O Love of God,” the latter of which includes the lyrics, “O Love of God, strong and true, in my barren soul, a river running through. O love of God swift and straight, you have washed away my sin and left no trace.” Here’s what Laura had to say about the song: http://wjtl.com/listen/wjtl-casts/

New Tunes at 9 Roundup with Sidewalk Prophets

phil : August 13, 2014 11:07 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

Sidewalk Prophets played a show for an enthusiastic crowd last week at the Junction Center Tent. The band, led by lead singer Dave Frey, played several tracks off their first two projects: “These Simple Truths” from 2009; and “Live Like That,” from 2012. (Look for a new project in 2015.)

Dave Frey says, “It’s not always easy for any of us to do what God has called us to do; to go make disciples of the world.” Not only is Dave Frey a talented, soulful singer, he’s also a gifted songwriter and storyteller. On New Tunes at 9, he told the story of a Christian on a mission: to share the truth of Christ—one man’s encounter with illusionist Penn Jillette, and how that story ties in with the new Sidewalk Prophets’ song, Save My Life.” (Listen to the conversation here: http://wjtl.com/listen/wjtl-casts/)

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! Welcome to this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.)

Manafest was a recent guest on New Tunes at 9 http://wjtl.com/listen/wjtl-casts/. Manafest, whose real name is Christopher Greenwood, is set to release his new project, “The Moment,” on August 5.

Manafest is a Canadian musician and author; his 2013 book “Fighter: Five Keys to Conquering Fear and Reaching Your Dreams,” was an honest document addressing the challenges of fame and struggling through times of distress, notably, coming to terms with his father’s suicide.

“Fighter” is broken down into seven chapters; the first five are devoted to book’s sub-title: the five keys to conquering fear and reaching your dreams. (Manafest outlines the keys as courage, perseverance, mindset, discipline, and will power).
