Akron, PA will once again hold its annual “Shoe-In” this New Year’s Eve to welcome 2013.  The 2012 Shoe-In runs from 8:00 until midnight at Broad Street Park.  This year’s event features free food, a street hockey tournament, a DJ spinning tunes, bonfire and a hayride. A giant, lighted shoe will drop as the last seconds of 2012 tick away. Hot dogs with sauerkraut and condiments, cookies and hot chocolate will be served free of charge.  There will also be face-painting artists, fire officials with an engine on hand, a DJ playing family-friendly music to add to the celebration.  Good’s Disposal and Ephrata National Bank are once again the event sponsors.  In conjunction with the midnight shoe-drop, which honors Akron’s roots in the shoe-making industry, the borough will collect new shoes to be donated to Ephrata Social Services and Peter’s Porch, an outreach ministry of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron.  Shoes can be dropped off now at Zion Lutheran Church or Weiser’s Market both on Main Street or at the Akron Borough Hall or Ephrata National Bank Akron branch both on South 7th Street.
