New Tunes at 9 Roundup: Joy Ike

March 7th, 2013 No comments

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! It’s time for this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.) We like Ike! We like Ike! Joy Ike is a singer/songwriter we like! In fact, Joy Ike stopped by last week for a Live from the Junction Center event. Joy sang and played guitar, and she was joined on stage by Peace, her sister and percussionist.

Joy Ike’s latest project is called “All or Nothing.” It includes 10 songs full of superb piano playing, Joy’s spectacular, mature voice, and what she likes to call, “soul-folk.” Incidentally, Joy was born to Nigerian immigrants and, as she recalls, “some of my earliest memories involve sitting in the living room with my family and singing Nigerian choruses.”

At http://www.joyike.com/, you’ll find her facebook page, you-tube, and a link to buy “All or Nothing” on iTunes and Amazon. If you go to wjtl.com, click on the videos tab: you’ll find a live performance of the first-single, “Everything You Have.”

New Tunes at 9 Roundup: Green River Ordinance

February 27th, 2013 No comments

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! It’s time for this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.) Last week on New Tunes at 9, I had a wonderful conversation with a young bass player named Geoff Ice; Geoff is one of the members of Green River Ordinance, a roots-rock band based in Ft. Worth, Texas. If you like the music of Rend Collective, Rhett Walker Band, or Needtobreathe, there’s a very good chance that Green River Ordinance will appeal to you, too. Green River Ordinance recently spent 10 days playing for military troops in the Middle East; one grateful military family posted on the band’s facebook page: “thank you for showing our service members how much we appreciate them.” The new project from Green River Ordinance is called, “Under Fire.” It includes the first single, “New Day,” whose lyrics include, “there’s an ocean inside us all, a little bit of grace to break my fall.” Geoff Ice talked about the song on New Tunes at 9. For more on Green River Ordinance, go to http://greenriverordinance.com/ You’ll find the iTunes music store, facebook, twitter, you-tube and more.

New Tunes at 9 Roundup: Mitch McVicker

February 21st, 2013 1 comment

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! It’s time for this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.) Last week, singer/songwriter Mitch McVicker stopped by the Junction Center, for a live performance and radio broadcast, for WJTL listeners. Mitch McVicker is currently touring in support of his new, 10-song project, “Underneath,” releasing next Tuesday. “Underneath” is Mitch’s 9th project, and it was funded by a kickstarter campaign.  “The songs of ‘Underneath’ explore the earthly practical truths and mysterious beauty of the kingdom of God, he says.” “The songs have been inspired by Jesus’ sermon on the mountain, in which he teaches that the kingdom of God does not lie on the surface. And that’s ‘Underneath’s main theme.” For more on Mitch McVicker, go to http://www.mitchmcvicker.com/. You’ll find links to buy his music, you-tube videos, and much more.

New Tunes at 9 Roundup: All Things New

January 31st, 2013 No comments

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! It’s time for this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.) Some of the new music currently playing on New Tunes at 9 includes a fine new track, “New Man,” from the Florida-based band, All Things New. (The self-titled project from All Things New is releasing April 9 on BEC Recordings.) There’s a lyric video for “New Man” on you-tube, the first single off the disc that credits all members as co-writers. After one viewer saw the video, she wrote: “This song really does help people, and show them they always have someone to go to, no matter what.” A portion of the lyrics read:  “’Cause God you made me new. You’ve restored my heart and turned my ashes into life.” Lead singer Garrett Hornbucke was my guest this week on New Tunes at 9 http://wjtl.com/listen/wjtl-casts/; Garrett spoke about the new song, “New Man.” For more on All Things New, go to the band’s facebook page and homepage at http://allthingsnewband.com/Site/HOME.html. You can follow All Things New on twitter and instagram.
