New Tunes at 9 Roundup

November 23rd, 2011

Radio Friend Phil – New Tunes at 9 airs weeknights at 9:00 pm on WJTL. Some of the new projects we featured this week on New Tunes at 9 were “God’s Not Dead,” by Newsboys, “It’s A Shamrock Christmas Vol. 2” compilation and “Smalltown Poets Christmas.” Smalltown Poets is a 5-piece band formed in Georgia in 1996. The band first achieved recognition with their self-titled debut, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Rock Album. (The project also included their radio hit, “Prophet, Priest and King.”) Over the next several years, Smalltown Poets released 3 additional projects and built-up a strong fan base by touring and staying connected with their fans on line. Now, Smalltown Poets return with a tremendous collection of songs on a the new project, “Smalltown Poets Christmas.” The core members of the band remain vocalist/guitarist Michael Johnston and keyboard player Danny Stephens. You can preview the entire new project at http://smalltownpoetschristmas.com/?tag=christmas; you can also watch videos of the band recording the songs in-studio, too. Smalltown Poets’ music is on iTunes, CD Baby and Amazon.

Phil, I saw Newsboys a couple weeks ago in Bear, Delaware. Manic Drive opened for them. I had always been a fan of Newsboys. I mean, I knew all their radio hits but didn’t own any of their albums. After seeing them in concert I put God’s Not Dead on my Christmas Wish List. Funny thing is, there has been so much turnover in the band the drummer appears to be the only Aussie still in the group. Michael Tait is awesome up front. Wish he had sung a few of his solo tracks. He did do a couple DC Talk tunes…they closed with Jesus Freak. Kind of surreal.
