HERB SUERETH –

Here’s this week’s Real News of Inspiration

From York Daily Record’s John Hilton

Is it possible for a Christian movie to compete against Hollywood blockbusters and be successful?  Well, it is possible and it did happen!  “Courageous”, the new movie from Sherwood Pictures, recently debuted 4th earning more than $9 million in its opening weekend.  It brought many movie-goers out that normally do not like what is produced by Hollywood.  Rev. Ken Gibson, pastor of Pleasant View Brethren in Christ Church in Red Lion, attended a prescreening of the movie and decided he wanted to bring the movie to York.  Sherwood pictures informed him that he would need to pre sell 1000 tickets to bring “Courageous” to York.  He did better.  By forming a coalition a churches and Christian organizations, He sold 1400 tickets!  For more information about “Courageous”, visit http://www.courageousthemovie.com/

I’ve not had the opportunity to watch this movie but have been hearing some rave reviews. I believe that movies like music are an expression of art. Art is a reflection or a perception of real life seen through the eyes of the artist. There will always be people who don’t think we should be influenced by pop-culture things like movies and music, etc…,or even express our values through media. I believe that God is a masterful artist that creates beauty and sculpts masterpieces everyday. God gave Christians and non-christian the ability to create expressions of art. The only difference is that we (Christians) have sat idle and let secular expressions of art corner the industry and in a way dictate what is an acceptable reality of morals and ethics (or lack there of). I I do believe there is potential for a movie with values and a good message to compete with Hollywood. If anything a movie such as “Courageous” better reflects what real life is and not the over-the-top exaggeration that is most of the movies coming out of Hollywood. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great action flick but I also have a need for reminders of what it means to be a Christian and how the things I face are not exclusive to just me. People are hungry for a great escape which is the great appeal of Hollywood. It is bigger than life. However, God IS bigger than life and we need to live like He is who He is, even with our artistic expressions and what we invest our time and money into. When it comes down to it, church leaders need to promote biblical expressions of art because Hollywood is doing an excellent job of promoting their message. People will always find pleasure in art (whatever from of art) and will invest time and money to be entertained. I am a communications student and one of the things we learn very early is that everything communicates, even lack of communication is communicating something. So lets communicate something worth watching or listening.
