New Tunes at 9 Roundup: Switchfoot

January 23rd, 2014

RADIO FRIEND PHIL – Greetings! It’s time for this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup. (New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.) Veteran rock band Switchfoot released their ninth record “Fading West,” last week. The San Diego based band was founded in 1996 by Jon Foreman, Tim Foreman, and Chad Butler; they signed to Charlie Peacock’s re:think label and released their debut project, “The Legend of Chin,” in 1997. Subsequent releases were met with loyal fan appreciation and critical acclaim: 1999s “New Way to Be Human,” Learning to Breathe” from 2000; and most importantly, “The Beautiful Letdown,” from 2003. In 2013, Switchfoot released the film, “Fading West,” shot during the band’s 2013 world tour. Described as “part rock documentary, part surf film, and part travelogue,” front man Jon Foreman says, “Our goal was always to be professional surfers—and I’m only partially kidding when I say that. We love surfing, so this was kind of a chance to introduce that to the rest of the world, and maybe connect a few dots to the music as well.” For more on Switchfoot, and to order a CD or digital download of “Fading West,” go to http://switchfoot.com/.
