Over the weekend, my family and I took Radio Friend Phil up on a longstanding invitation to visit his music room in his home. This special space is the product of decades of vinyl collecting and meticulous audio gear curating. He even has a sofa set up at the exact sweet spot for the listener to clearly hear every detail the recording artist intended. The results are amazing! Phil sat us down with a mug of his favorite hot tea and played a variety of records for us: Franz Schubert, Herbie Hancock, Billie Holiday, Credence Clearwater Revival, Pat Metheny and The Beatles. We fell in love all over again with familiar songs like “Here Comes The Sun” because we heard parts we never heard before…all because of how well Radio Friend Phil presented the music.
It got me thinking about how I present things. Am I taking great care of the material like Phil cares for his vinyl? Do I make sure that I set up my words as well as Phil sets up his gear? And do I make sure that my listener is as comfortable and well-positioned to hear the heart of what I’m saying like Phil does with that comfy sofa and hot tea?
Ephesians 5 talks a lot about living intentionally and graciously as we interact with others. I love the phrase in verse 15 that say “Be very careful, then, how you live.” It’s something that comes to my mind a lot. God has been so very good to us! I want to honor and love Him by cheerfully choosing to be very careful how I live to bring Him glory. Verse 2 gets to the heart of it, “And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us, and has given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling fragrance.”
