New Tunes at 9 Roundup: Mark Schultz

phil : July 26, 2012 7:37 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

Greetings! It’s time for this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup: New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.  Singer-songwriter Mark Schultz’s new project, “All Things Possible,” releases September 4. Mark stopped by the Junction Center this week for a live mini-concert. Mark was warm, enthusiastic and entertaining as he performed some of his biggest hits and enduring songs for WJTL listeners. To date, those songs have included, among others, “You Are A Child of Mine,” “I Am The Way” and “He’s My Son.” Mark Schultz is a native of Colby, Kansas, heavily influenced by singer-songwriter Billy Joel. Like Billy Joel, Mark Schultz is an extremely gifted piano player and songwriter. Not only is Mark a talented musician, he’s also a strong cyclist. In 2007, Schultz began bicycling from California to Maine planning to stop along the way to perform concerts and participate in special events. Official Mark Across America Website.  His “Mark Across America”  tour ended on July 8, 2007 in Bangor, Maine.  According to Mark Schultz, his inspiration to make this 3,500-mile trek came from a visit he and his wife Kate made to orphanages in Mexico. The purpose of the trip was to meet the needs of orphans and widows in distress.  For more on Mark Schultz, go http://markschultzmusic.com/?continue=1 You’ll find details on the “Letters From War” hardcover book (inspired by Mark’s original hit song of the same name), and much more.

ann : July 25, 2012 3:36 pm : Ann D'Alessandro, Staff Pages

Ann D’Alessandro

Happy Winning Wednesday!  Since we are celebrating “Christmas in July” on this Winning Wednesday, I thought that it would be appropriate to share some new Christmas music!  (Brand New!)  I Love Christmas music, but New Christmas music – even better!  If you were at the “Called To Love Tour” concert on Nov. 4th then you got to see  Jason Gray.  That was the first time that I got to see him and just loved him and his music.  He is such a genuine and gentle person and his music is great too!  This song is called “Easier – Song of the Wiseman” and is written by Jason Gray and Joel Hanson (from PFR).  Enjoy & Merry Christmas in July!

Life Application Truth-Being A Prepared Witness

john : July 23, 2012 2:32 pm : John Shirk, Staff Pages

JOHN SHIRK – from First Peter 3, verses 15 and 16.

“In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

Some key ingredients to being an authentic, effective witness for Jesus are found in these few words.

By setting apart Christ as Lord, we have a firm conviction in where our faith is planted. The Apostle Paul said, “I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.”

Being prepared to give an answer for our hope does not suggest that we have all the answers to the problems of the world. But this statement does challenge us to know why we believe in Jesus. Reading and applying God’s Word is an important step to being ready to share the hope of being a Christian.

Doing this with gentleness and respect indicates that our attitude is in the right place. God’s love teaches us to have sincere concern for unbelievers, and to be patient with them in the process of representing Jesus to them.

Being a bold and respectful witness for Jesus is a vital sign of a changed life in the Year of Transformation.

Life Application Truth-A New Song

john : July 20, 2012 4:24 pm : John Shirk, Staff Pages

JOHN SHIRK – From Psalm 98:1.

“Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things, his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.”

The LORD has provided music as an instrument of worship. As time passes, we listen for new songs as instruments of worship.  Why is that? New songs have a fresh impact on us. They give us lyrics that stir us to holy passion, or maybe the lyrics connect with us because they describe an emotion or situation that we are experiencing at the current time. A new song may expand our awareness of God’s character as we praise Him for who He is and what He has done.

Have you ever thought of writing your own song to God? This can be a fulfilling exercise as we express personally what God means to us, or how He has transformed our lives by His grace. Whether we sing a new song that we have written or one written by someone else, music is a powerful expression of worship when it comes from the heart.

Singing a new song to the LORD is a vital sign of a changed life in the Year of Transformation.

New Tunes at 9 Roundup: Rhett Walker Band

phil : July 19, 2012 7:48 pm : music, Radio Friend Phil, Staff Pages

Radio Friend Phil – Greetings! It’s time for this week’s New Tunes at 9 Roundup: New Tunes at 9, one-hour of new and emerging music, weeknights at 9 p.m. on WJTL.   WJTL has played some excellent Southern-rock bands throughout the years including Needtobreathe, Decemberadio and Samestate, among others.  This week’s roundup artist is Rhett Walker Band from Nashville, Tennessee. Led by Rhett Walker Canipe, a young outspoken musician, Rhett is the son of a southern preacher who says, “We moved away from my hometown when I was 16, and I didn’t like that. I just went nuts, doing whatever I wanted to do in the moment. I mixed with the wrong crowd, got into fights and drugs, and expelled from school. I was sent to a Christian school, the only one that would take me, met a girl, and it wasn’t long after that we found out she was pregnant. That was the stop in the path for me.” From there, Rhett and his girlfriend April decided to redirect their lives. He rededicated his life to God, and she accepted Christ for the very first time. As Rhett and April matured in faith, Rhett began leading worship at churches, decided to pursue music and songwriting, and move to Nashville. To read the complete story, go to http://rhettwalkerband.com/ You can sample music off the new project “Come to the River,” connect to the iTunes store, watch videos, and link to facebook and twitter.

Life Application Truth-The Work Of God In You

john : July 18, 2012 5:47 pm : John Shirk, Staff Pages

JOHN SHIRK – From Philippians 2:13.

“It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.”

This verse is packed with significant details concerning the Christian life. Let’s break down these phrases for a closer look:

God is working in us. He is actively working in the life of the believer to build godly character and make our witness fruitful for His glory.

To will and to act. His love is the compelling influence that motivates us to carry out His redemptive work in the world. It could be a burden to help the poor, to reach out to troubled youth, or comfort someone grieving the loss of a loved one. In God’s plan, good intentions are followed up by obedient actions.

According to His good purpose. The work that God has for us to do is always in line with His will, consistent with His character, and brings honor to His name.

The work of God carried out in a believer is a vital sign of a changed life in the Year of Transformation.
