Faith Building Verses-Philippians 3:13 and 14

February 17th, 2022 No comments

JOHN SHIRK – Todays’ Faith-Building Verses are Philippians 3, verses 13 and 14.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

In the Winter Olympics, you will not see a skier looking back as they race down the slope. Looking back would cause them to lose their focus on where they are going and lose their forward momentum.

The Apostle Paul gives us direction for our focus by his example. He did not want to look back on his journey with regrets or with a sense of retreat. He was focused on moving forward with Jesus, step by step. He was on a journey. He had not yet arrived, but he was making good progress.

These faith-building verses inspire us to keep moving forward with our eyes on the prize in the Year of Relationship.

Daily Challenge-Run With Purpose

July 27th, 2021 No comments

JOHN SHIRK – In the Year of Endurance, today’s Daily Challenge motivates us to run the race of faith with purpose.

Have you ever heard of an Olympic athlete who shows up at the games without training for their event?  In reality, each athlete has invested an enormous amount of time, energy, and training to fulfill their dream of representing their country, and to win a gold medal.

The Apostle Paul looked to the dedicated athlete and said to the church in so many words, “we can learn from their example as we apply it to the Christian life.”

He wrote in First Corinthians 9:24, “Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”

If we keep our focus on Jesus, He will give us incentive to run a good race with every step we take.

Take the daily challenge to run the race with purpose on the journey of faith.

Moment Of Celebration-The Prize Of A Champion

February 12th, 2014 No comments

JOHN SHIRK – Today’s Moment Of Celebration reflects on the prize of a champion.

The Apostle Paul occasionally referred to the ancient Olympic games and compared them to the Christian life.

He said in First Corinthians 9:25, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

Just as an Olympic athlete competes to the best of their ability for the gold medal, so the Apostle Paul is saying that he wanted to serve Jesus in a way that represented His great name. Such a mission has meaningful purpose, with eternal impact.

The crowning honor of an Olympic athlete is to stand at the platform, with the gold medal, representing their country while their national anthem plays. The crowning honor of Christ’s followers is to hear our Master say “Well done, good and faithful servant.” That is the applause of heaven in response to our faithful service for the glory of our King.

The prize of God’s applause is a reason to be glad in the Year of Celebration.
